EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – Summer Ag. Services Vegetation Control

We are seeking Vegetation Control Technicians to join the Agriculture Services team; this position performs mechanical, cultural, or chemical weed control on public and private properties. Technicians are required to enter weed control information into an iPad app, map weed infestations, and write spray reports.

Hours of work – 40 hours per week (some overtime may be required)

Responsibilities

  • Identify and control invasive species on public and private properties as per the Alberta Weed Control Act and Regulations
  • Controlling weeds through cultural, mechanical, biological, or chemical practices
  • Operate self-propelled equipment including trucks, trailers, tractors, zero turn mowers, UTVs, backpack sprayers, and various hand tools in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ensure completion of assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision
  • Work with confidential and sensitive information

Skills and Abilities

  • Effective customer service, public relations and communication skills (verbal and written) to work with diverse groups of individuals and the ability to deal with residents in challenging situations
  • Willingness and ability to work in inclement weather and remote rural areas
  • An understanding of current agricultural practices
  • General computer proficiency and the ability to learn specific mapping software
  • Able to work alone, under minimal supervision

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent education
  • Two years related experience is preferred
  • Courses and experience with weed identification and the Weed Control Act are strong assets
  • Current Standard First Aid certification is an asset
  • Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate would be an asset, or eligible Herbicide Application Authorized Assistant certificate
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Operators License with less than five demerits; use of personal vehicle is required
  • Ability to perform physical tasks that may include lifting objects up to 25 kgs in weight, standing, bending, and shoveling
  • Perform work outdoors in varied terrain and in all weather conditions
