EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – Summer Ag. Services Weed Inspector

We are seeking Weed Inspectors to join the Agriculture Services team; this position inspects public and private properties for noxious and prohibited noxious weeds as listed in the Alberta Weed Control Act and Regulations. In addition, the Weed Inspector is required to enter weed inspection information into an iPad app, map weed infestations, and write spray reports.  Hours of work – 40 hours per week (some overtime may be required).  There is a possibility that the position may extend into October.


  • Inspect public and private properties as per the Alberta Weed Control Act and Regulations
  • Enforce the Alberta Weed Control Act which involves issuing notices, tracking due dates, working with specific software, and initiating work orders
  • Controlling weeds through cultural, mechanical, biological, or chemical practices
  • Perform insect and pest surveys
  • Educate residents about ecological and economic impact of weed infestations, invasive species, and how to identify problem weeds on their property
  • Communicate with various stakeholders such as residents, producers, and commercial businesses
  • Work with confidential and sensitive information

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Alberta Weed Control Act; education in or knowledge in plant identification, crop production, and horticulture.
  • Effective customer service, public relations and communication skills (verbal and written) to work with diverse groups of individuals and the ability to deal with residents in challenging situations
  • Experience working with the public in various situations including one on one communications, public speaking, and educating
  • An understanding of current agricultural practices
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to learn specific mapping software
  • Able to work alone, under minimal supervision


  • Preferred post-secondary education with an emphasis on applicable agricultural, or biological science
  • Two years related experience is preferred
  • Courses and experience with weed identification and the Weed Control Act are strong assets
  • Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered
  • Current Standard First Aid certification & Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate would be an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Operators License with less than five demerits
  • Satisfactory criminal record check; vulnerable sector check may be required
  • Ability to lift objects up to 25 kgs in weight, perform work outdoors in varied terrain and in all weather conditions
