Substance use and abuse in the workplace is a serious matter. Substance use can be anywhere on the continuum ranging from beneficial, casual or recreational, problematic or substance use disorder.

Even if you only have one employee, you have a legal requirement to provide a healthy and safe work environment and must comply with provincial safety legislation. In addition, the Criminal Code of Canada established new legal duties for workplace health and safety and imposes serious penalties for violations that result in injuries or death.

Impairment is a long standing occupational health and safety issue that poses hazards in any workplace and addressing impairment of any kind can be a difficult balancing act.
