Assessment information

The Assessment department determines property valuations (assessments) for all properties within Camrose County to ensure an equitable distribution of taxes. Assessments are prepared annually in accordance with Alberta legislation and are audited by the Province to ensure fairness and consistency.

Assessment and property taxes are closely related, but they are not the same thing. Assessment is used to ensure that the cost of municipal services is distributed fairly among property owners. Generally, properties with higher assessed values pay a greater share of property taxes than those with lower assessed values.

Each year, Council sets property tax rates (mill rates) based on the funding required to provide municipal services. The amount of property tax owing is determined by applying the appropriate tax rate to the assessed value of a property. Different property classes, such as residential and non-residential properties, may be taxed at different rates.

The role of the Assessment Department is to maintain accurate and up-to-date property values to ensure the fair and equitable distribution of taxes from year to year.

How Different Types of Property Are Assessed

  • Residential and Non-Residential Property are assessed based on market value.
  • Farmland is assessed based on its ability to produce agricultural crops, not its market value.
  • Farm Buildings are generally exempt from assessment and taxation.
  • Regulated Property, such as oilfield equipment, pipelines, and power lines, is assessed using provincial standards.
